If you don't know, I went to law school so I could practice adoption law. So, I was thrilled when I got the opportunity to do my first adoption for some very good friends of mine. I had not planned on doing it, seeing as I have never done one and I am not with a firm that would provide support and assistance. However, the judge encouraged me to do it and I was too scared of him to say no. So, since then I have been lying awake at night worrying that I will somehow ruin this perfect day for my friends. They have been trying to adopt this little girl for more than 4 years and on September 19th, they will finally become her legal family.
So, today I went down to the courthouse to try and find some answers. My first stop was the court clerk's office. I needed to make some copies of the file, but because this involves a juvenile, I had to have a court order signed by the judge to access the file. Thank God, there was a young attorney (we were both admitted last year) there whom I had met during my second year of law school. As it turns out, he is now in private practice and does a lot of these DHS adoptions. He made a copy of his order for me and I was able to access the file. He also made himself available to me to answer any questions. He let me sit in on an adoption he was finalizing that day (always a joy to see), AND THEN he went out of his way to find me an Adoption Attorney handbook which is full of invaluable information and forms. I am grateful to him and as soon as this adoption is successfully complete, I plan on sending him a thank you card and gift.
Now, I am feeling confident and excited to complete this very important task for my friends. I feel so blessed to be able to help complete this family which I feel the Lord has placed together. This is why I went to law school!
